Our Beliefs
Mission Statement
The mission of First Presbyterian Church of LaFollette is to proclaim the life and teaching of Jesus Christ. We are called to be healers, up lifters, and peacemakers in the church and the community. Our doors are always open and we welcome those who would join us to celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ
We Believe:
As a part of the PC(U.S.A.) we are guided by The Constitution of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Key elements to the beliefs of First Presbyterian Church, LaFollette are highlighted below.
Sacraments:
The author of all sacraments is not any man, but God alone. We acknowledge the sacraments of Baptism and the Lord's Supper.
Essentials of Faith:
The Session of First Presbyterian Church, LaFollette affirmed, without compromise, those theological and polity issues that we believe need to be recieved and adopted by officers of the Church, if the Church is to remain faithful to her Lord Jesus Christ. The Session unanimously accepted the following Essentials of Faith.
- Jesus is the only means of salvation for the world, and, is Lord of all creation.
- Acceptance of the Trinitarian formula as God's revelation of Himself as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
- Acceptance of the Holy Scriptures, the word of God recorded in the Old Testament and New Testament, as the only authority for our life together.
- Acceptance of the accounts of the incarnation, the crucifixion, and the resurrection of our Lord as literal accounts of God's involvement in human affairs.
- The Church shall be inclusive...all, who are called by God to be a part of the visible Church, are to be welcomed in our worship and work and invited to become a part of the body of Christ.
- Membership does not automatically confer a right to leadership.
- Those calle dto positions of leadership are to be held to a higher standard than members...with regard both to their personal behavior and to their accountability to the church.
- No person engaged in a sexual relationship outside the bonds of marriage as defined by the confessions and the Scriptures, shall be eligible for ordination to leadership...this is true of heterosexual persons as well as gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered persons.
Members:
A faithful member accepts Christ's call to be involved responsibly in the ministry of the Church. Such involvement includes:
- proclaiming the Good News,
- taking part in the common life and worship of the Church,
- praying and studying Scripture and the faith of the Christian Church,
- supporting the work of the Church through the giving of time, talents, and money,
- participating in the governing responsibilities of the Church,
- demonstrating a new quality of life within and through the Church,
- responding to God's activity in the world through service to others,
- living responsibly in the personal, family, vocational, political, cultural, and social relationships of life ,
- working in the world for peace, justice, freedom, and human fulfillment .
The Apostles' Creed
I BELIEVE in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. |
